A poem for Christmas: to my "family"

I must preface this poem with the fact that it is a sistina, my favorite type of poem. I like it because I can take key words, that have deep meaning for me, or the receiver of the poem, and re-purpose the word depending on where it falls in the scheme. The key words for my families Christmas poem came from our family values statement we came up with the other day.

Enjoy:

Dear my most precious gift, Family
this holiday I treasure most, our time
together on our magnificent Earth
in our cozy home with a nourished
mind filled with the knowledge
that together we have the compassion to care

for each other, and enough to care
beyond our own nuclear family.
We have each been given the knowledge
of life without. It is time
for each of us to nourish
the grand and minuscule components of our Earth

with our unique talents and passions. The Earth
is hungry and yearns for personal care
compassion and gentleness. She desires to glean nourishment
from the diversity of inhabiting families
that take the seconds that compound into meaningful time
to truly know

her, you, us, the neighbor, the stranger. Knowledge
empowers each of us to love our Earth
as much as each other, taking time
to rejoice in the gifts of beauty, caring
for the forgotten, remembering that we are an interconnected family
who needs desperately the nourishment

of love, food, hope. Nourishment
comes in many forms. With knowledge
and acknowledgement each family
member can help the Earth
know love. A place where all beings receive care
a hug, clean water, a meal, time

from a loved one who values each fraction of time
together as a way to nourish
every breath that enters our bodies, and to care,
knowing
that as the Earth
spins, the same light that leaves us, shines on our global family

because when we remember that all creatures are part of our family
we can take the time to see each part of the Earth
as a giver of life, love and most inspiringly a place where dreams are nourished.
